Range Shift re-scales every price move by the market's own range — so a strong reading means the same thing in a sleepy session and a violent one. One oscillator, calibrated to volatility, with clean threshold markers. It's in the final stage of our build-and-parity process — here's a preview of what's coming.

The problem
Raw momentum indicators measure price change in points. But fifty points is a yawn in a fast session and a stampede in a quiet one. The same number flips between meaningless and urgent depending on volatility you're eyeballing separately — so you second-guess every signal, re-tune settings per symbol, and still get whipsawed when conditions shift.
You don't need another oscillator that ignores context. You need one that already knows the weather.
The mechanism
Range Shift answers one question in a session-proof way: how big is this move, relative to how big moves have actually been lately?
It takes the change in price over your chosen lookback (the momentum), then divides it by a simple average of the recent true range — the market's own measure of how far it travels per bar. The result is momentum expressed in range units, not points.
A reading of +1 means "this move is about one typical range." That sentence stays true whether the instrument is calm or wild — which is exactly why a fixed threshold finally behaves consistently across sessions and symbols.
Note: the range average is a simple average of true range, chosen deliberately for stable, transparent scaling.
A single clean oscillator in its own window, crossing a zero line, with a marker each time it crosses your threshold up or down. No clutter, no repaint, no twelve overlapping lines — just momentum-in-context and the moments it shifts.
| Parameter | Does |
|---|---|
| ATR period | bars in the range average |
| Momentum length | lookback for the price move |
| Threshold | cross level for a marker (in range units) |
The proof
Range Shift isn't "whatever compiled." Every StratusQuant release must clear a value-by-value parity gate — the MetaTrader 5 build compared against an independent reference across history and required to match it bar-for-bar, including every threshold-cross marker — before it ships.
Plenty of indicators look right and compute something subtly different from what they claim — a wrong averaging method, an off-by-one bar, a look-ahead leak. StratusQuant's release gate is a value-by-value parity check against a reference: matching the reference, not just compiling cleanly, is the definition of done.
Each release is also validated across multiple symbols and timeframes before it ships, so it behaves the same wherever you load it.
